How to Make Melt and Pour Soap at Home: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Melt and pour soap making is one of the easiest ways to create handmade soap. It's perfect for beginners because the soap base is already made, so there's no need to work with lye.

What You'll Need

Step 1: Melt the Soap Base

Cut the soap base into small cubes and place them in a microwave-safe jug.

Heat in 20-30 second bursts, stirring between each interval until completely melted.

Step 2: Add Fragrance and Colour

Once melted, add your chosen colour and fragrance or essential oil.

As a general guide:

  • Use 1-3% fragrance for a light scent
  • Use up to the manufacturer's recommended maximum usage rate

Stir gently to ensure the mica and fragrance is evenly distributed.

Step 3: Pour into Moulds

Carefully pour the soap into silicone moulds.

Spray the surface with isopropyl alcohol to remove any bubbles.

Step 4: Let the Soap Set

Allow the soap to cool and harden completely. This usually takes a few hours.

Once firm, remove the soap from the mould.

Choosing a Soap Base

Different soap bases create different results:

  • Clear Soap Base – Great for bright colours and embeds.
  • White Soap Base – Produces solid, vibrant bars.

Step 5: Wrap Your Soap

Once your soap has completely cooled and hardened, it's important to wrap it as soon as possible.

Melt and pour soap contains glycerin, which naturally attracts moisture from the air. If left unwrapped, the soap can develop small water droplets on the surface, often referred to as "sweating."

Whether you're making your very first soap or expanding your creative skills, melt and pour soap is a fantastic place to start.
